Educational Info

The Animal Surgical and Emergency Center, accepts seven (7) persons for our rotating internship program.

As an intern, your time will be divided between surgery duty, day and night emergency/ICU duty, primary receiving, Radiology, Cardiology & Internal Medicine, as well as rotations with other specialties i.e. Ophthalmology, etc.

In addition, we can help you arrange to work with other specialists in the area, allowing the intern additional time to focus on the particular specialty she/he plans to pursue. This time can also be spent visiting universities, attending continuing education meetings, etc.

Interns are expected both to learn and to contribute knowledge. In addition to daily rounds of surgical and emergency cases, participation is mandatory in our grand rounds, journal review and morbidity/mortality rounds. A lecture series is presented throughout the year with surgical topics, guest specialist and practitioner lectures, and intern presentations.

A full range of diagnostic and surgical equipment is available with digital radiology, digital helical CT scanner, digital Flouroscopy, AO/ASIF orthopedic equipment, total hip replacement instrumentation, fluoroscopic image intensifier, MRI, endoscopy, CO2 laser, arthroscopy, EMG/NCV analysis, ICU cages, ultrasonography, et cetera, routinely in use.

Interns who have completed our program have had a high success rate in obtaining residency positions, both in surgery and in other specialties: radiology, anesthesiology, critical care, etc.

Compensation includes a base salary and incentive plan for emergency / I.C.U. cases, health insurance reimbursement, two weeks paid vacation, and CE benefits.

We are located in West Los Angeles. This is a highly urbanized setting, 10 minutes from the beaches, downtown L.A., Beverly Hills, UCLA, and LA airport. Within 2 hours drive are ski resorts, numerous beaches, amusement parks, Palm Springs, deserts and mountains.

The successful applicant will be one who is hard-working, self-motivated, intelligent, friendly and who enjoys working with others. A personal interview is not mandatory, but is encouraged. For further information, please feel free to contact our senior criticalist, Dr. Emily Southward.
